01 Über die App

ZoneCalc ist ein präziser Belichtungsrechner nach dem Zonensystem von Ansel Adams – dem Goldstandard der analogen Belichtungskontrolle seit 1941. Das Zonensystem unterteilt Helligkeitswerte einer Szene in 11 Zonen (0–X). Jede Zone entspricht einem Belichtungswert von einer Blendenstufe. Zone V ist der Referenzpunkt: Mittelgrau mit 18 % Reflexion. Durch gezielte Belichtung für die Schatten und angepasste Entwicklung für die Lichter lässt sich der Kontrastumfang jeder Szene optimal auf Film übertragen.

02 Funktionen

Miss die dunkelste zeichnende Stelle (Zone II) und die hellste zeichnende Stelle (Zone VIII) mit einem Spotbelichtungsmesser. ZoneCalc berechnet die optimale Zone-V-Belichtungszeit, den dynamischen Umfang der Szene und eine Entwicklungsempfehlung.

04 Häufige Fragen

Benötige ich ein Spotbelichtungsmessgerät?
Für die klassische Zwei-Punkt-Messung ja – ein Spotmesser (1°–5°) ist ideal. In der Mehrfachmessung kannst du EV-Werte auch manuell eingeben und den Zonen am interaktiven Zonenstreifen frei zuordnen.
Was bedeuten die N-Werte (N−2, N−1, N+1, N+2)?
N steht für Normalentwicklung. Hat die Szene mehr Kontrast als der Film aufnehmen kann, empfiehlt ZoneCalc verkürzte Entwicklung (N−1 oder N−2), um die Lichter zu zähmen. Bei zu flachem Licht empfiehlt die App N+1 oder N+2 für verlängerte Entwicklung zur Kontraststeigerung.
Wie funktioniert die Reziprozitätskorrektur?
Bei langen Belichtungszeiten verliert Film an Empfindlichkeit (Schwarzschild-Effekt). ZoneCalc berechnet die korrigierte Zeit automatisch – filmspezifisch, da jede Emulsion eigene Reziprozitätskennlinien hat.
Mein Film ist nicht in der Liste – kann ich die App trotzdem nutzen?
Ja. Du kannst die Reziprozitätskorrektur manuell überschreiben oder einen ähnlichen Film als Annäherung wählen. Entwicklungszeiten und N-Empfehlung funktionieren filmunabhängig.
Die berechnete Belichtungszeit erscheint zu lang oder zu kurz.
Prüfe, ob Zone-II- und Zone-VIII-Messwerte korrekt eingegeben wurden. Zone II sollte die dunkelste zeichnende Stelle sein (nicht reines Schwarz), Zone VIII die hellste zeichnende Stelle (nicht Spitzlichter ohne Zeichnung). Kontrolliere außerdem ISO und Blende. Bei anhaltenden Unstimmigkeiten melde dich gerne.
Werden meine Messdaten gespeichert oder weitergegeben?
Nein. Alle Daten bleiben ausschließlich lokal auf deinem Gerät. Keine Übertragung an externe Server. Details im Datenschutzhinweis weiter unten.
Funktioniert ZoneCalc ohne Internetverbindung?
Ja, vollständig. Die App benötigt keine Internetverbindung – ideal für den Einsatz im Feld ohne Mobilfunkempfang.

ZoneCalc erhebt, speichert oder überträgt keinerlei personenbezogene Daten. Die App funktioniert vollständig offline und ohne Internetverbindung.

Lokal gespeicherte Daten: Messungen, Notizen und Einstellungen werden ausschließlich auf deinem Gerät gespeichert (lokaler App-Speicher von iOS). Diese Daten verlassen dein Gerät zu keinem Zeitpunkt.

Keine Tracker, keine Analytik: ZoneCalc verwendet weder Analyse-Frameworks noch Werbebibliotheken oder Drittanbieter-SDKs, die Nutzungsdaten erfassen könnten.

Keine Konten: Es gibt keine Anmeldung, keine Registrierung und keinen Cloud-Speicher.

iCloud-Backup: Wenn du iCloud-Backup aktiviert hast, können App-Daten im Rahmen des regulären Geräte-Backups bei Apple gesichert werden. Dies unterliegt der Datenschutzerklärung von Apple.

01 About the App

ZoneCalc is a precise exposure calculator based on the Zone System by Ansel Adams — the gold standard of analog exposure control since 1941. The Zone System divides scene brightness values into 11 zones (0–X). Each zone corresponds to one exposure value of 1 stop. Zone V is the reference point: middle gray with 18% reflectance. Through deliberate exposure for the shadows and adjusted development for the highlights, the contrast range of any scene can be optimally transferred to film.

04 FAQ

Do I need a spot meter?
For the classic two-point measurement, yes — a spot meter (1°–5°) is ideal. In multi-measurement mode you can enter EV values manually from any source and freely assign them to zones on the interactive zone strip.
What do the N-values (N−2, N−1, N+1, N+2) mean?
N stands for normal development. When the scene has more contrast than the film can capture, ZoneCalc recommends reduced development (N−1 or N−2) to tame the highlights. When the light is too flat, the app recommends N+1 or N+2 for extended development to boost contrast.
How does reciprocity correction work?
At long exposures, film loses sensitivity — the Schwarzschild effect. ZoneCalc automatically calculates the corrected exposure time using film-specific reciprocity curves, since each emulsion behaves differently.
My film isn't in the list — can I still use the app?
Yes. You can manually override the reciprocity correction or choose a similar film as an approximation. Development times and N-ratings work independently of the film selection.
The calculated shutter speed seems too long or too short.
Check that your Zone II and Zone VIII readings are correct. Zone II should be the darkest area with visible detail (not pure black), Zone VIII the brightest area with visible detail (not specular highlights). Also verify your ISO and aperture settings. If results still seem off, feel free to get in touch.
Are my measurements stored or shared anywhere?
No. All data — measurements, notes, settings — is stored exclusively on your device. Nothing is transmitted to external servers. See the Privacy Policy below.
Does ZoneCalc work without an internet connection?
Yes, fully. The app requires no internet connection — ideal for use in the field where mobile reception is unavailable.

Privacy Policy

ZoneCalc does not collect, store, or transmit any personal data. The app works entirely offline and requires no internet connection.

Locally stored data: Measurements, notes, and settings are stored exclusively on your device (iOS local app storage). This data never leaves your device.

No trackers, no analytics: ZoneCalc does not use any analytics frameworks, advertising libraries, or third-party SDKs that could collect usage data.

No accounts: There is no sign-in, no registration, and no cloud storage.

iCloud Backup: If you have iCloud Backup enabled, app data may be included in your regular device backup with Apple. This is subject to Apple's Privacy Policy.
